Measuring Conductivity It can be used as a measure of water quality and is economical and low maintenance. Solutions with good water quality and few pollutants have low conductivity. Conductivity maintenance is far less than pH and minimum calibration for boiler feed water, reverse osmosis and desalination applications.
Since conductivity increases to some extent with increasing ion concentration in the process, we can use it to correlate the % concentration value of a solution such as an acid or base. Also, since conductivity is non-specific, % concentration can only be measured based on one of the chemicals at a time, not a mixture of chemicals.
There are two basic sensor types for measuring conductivity: contact and inductive (ring, electrodeless). When using a touch sensor, conductivity is measured by applying an alternating current to the sensor electrodes (which together affect the cell constant) immersed in a solution and measuring the resulting voltage. The solution acts as an electrical conductor between the sensor electrodes.
