Oxidation-reduction potential is one of the few measurements that tells an operator both what the chemistry is doing and whether the dosing system is actually working. Choosing a digital ORP sensor is therefore less about the probe itself and more about matching the instrument to the process, the installation point and the way your team will maintain it. This guide summarises the questions we hear most often from plant engineers, integrators and purchasing teams, using the DRH890 digital ORP sensor as a reference design.

Most municipal wastewater and drinking water applications operate between -500 and +1000 mV, but industrial processes such as chromate reduction or cyanide destruction swing far wider. A probe rated from -2000 to 2000 mV with ±1 mV resolution and accuracy of 0.1% of range or ±2 mV covers both duties with one part number, avoiding a second spare item and the risk of fitting the wrong sensor during an emergency repair.
| Requirement | What to Check Before Ordering |
|---|---|
| Housing and wetted parts | Stainless steel 316 with POM is suitable for most municipal water, surface water and light chemical service |
| Ingress protection | IP68 is required for submerged and open channel installation |
| Pressure | Confirm the process stays at or below 1 bar at the probe location |
| Temperature | Continuous operation between 0 and 50 °C; check CIP or cleaning cycles separately |
| Cable and connector | PUR sheath for UV and oil resistance; choose bare wire, M12 plug or waterproof aviation plug to suit the junction box |
Installation errors cause more bad ORP readings than sensor failure does. Three rules matter most:
A 1-inch NPT thread at both ends allows side wall, flange, pipeline, submerged and flow-through mounting from one body, simplifying spares planning across several basins.

Digital ORP sensors with RS485 Modbus RTU need only four conductors: red for V+, black for V-, white for RS485 A and green for RS485 B. Power and communication are isolated inside the sensor, which helps when several instruments share one bus near variable-frequency drives. The DRH890 accepts 9 to 24 V DC at roughly 0.2 W, so it can run from the same cabinet as the PLC.
Before reading values, confirm that the slave address, baud rate, parity and stop bit match the master configuration. Communication faults are almost always a wiring or parameter mismatch, not a failed electrode.
| Calibration | Purpose | Register Address |
|---|---|---|
| Zero calibration | Sets the reference point with a standard solution | 206 |
| Slope calibration | Corrects electrode response across the range | 200 |
| Offset calibration | Applies a known offset to the displayed value | Per register map |
| Factory reset | Restores default parameters without changing communication settings | 400 |
Record mV and temperature at every calibration. A slowly falling slope is normal ageing; a sudden step change usually points to contamination, a damaged electrode or a degraded standard solution.
| Task | Recommended Frequency |
|---|---|
| Visual inspection | Monthly |
| Calibration check | Monthly, adjusted to process conditions |
| Electrode replacement | Yearly, adjusted to process conditions |
| Seal maintenance by manufacturer | Every two years |
The two-year seal service is not optional. If the seal is not maintained, water can enter the sensor body and destroy the electronics, turning a low-cost service item into a full replacement.
Ask for the full register map, the wiring diagram, the maintenance interval table and a replaceable measuring head. A supplier who documents these details before the order is placed is usually the one still answering technical questions two years later. Our team can provide the complete DRH890 manual and application advice for your basin or pipeline layout.
